Should Continue To Develop Diamond Tools In New Product Applications
Nov 10, 2017

Diamond has been used in cutting for hundreds of years as a super-hard tool material. In the tool development course, from the late nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth century, the cutter material was mainly represented by high-speed steel. In 1927, Germany first developed the cemented carbide tool material and widely used in many applications. In the 1950s, Sweden and UK made synthetic diamonds respectively. And cutting tools entered a period of superhard materials. In the 1970s, polycrystalline diamond (PCD) was synthesized by high-pressure synthesis technology, which solved the problem of rare and expensive natural diamonds and extended the application of diamond tools to aerospace, aerospace, automotive, electronics, stone And many other fields.

PCD hardness is less than natural diamond (HV6000 or so), but the bending strength is much higher than natural diamond. In addition, adjusting the concentration of diamond powder can change the physical and mechanical properties of PCD products to adapt different materials, different processing needs, providing a variety of choices for tool users.

PCD tool is much more impact resistant and shock resistant than natural diamond. Compared with the carbide, the hardness is higher 3-4 times; the life is higher about 50-100 times; cutting speed can be increased 5-20 times; roughness can reach Ra0.05μm. And it is high efficiency and good processing accuracy.

Like natural diamond, PCD is not suitable for processing steel castings. This tool is mainly used for processing non-ferrous metals and non-metallic materials, such as aluminum, copper, zinc, gold, silver, platinum and alloys, as well as ceramics, carbon fiber, rubber, plastics. Another major feature of PCD is the processing of wood and stone.

PCD tool is particularly suitable for processing high-silicon aluminum, so it has been widely used in the automotive, aviation, electronics and shipbuilding industry.

In recent years, new innovations in new materials, new technologies, new processes and new equipment are emerging in the world, such as ultra-fine pre-alloyed powders, laser processing, vacuum brazing, diamond plating and diamond uniform technology. These technologies are being highly concerned with the focus of research and development, and it has also gradually formed industrialization. With the industrialization of these R & D achievements, the performance of diamond tools has been continuously improved and its functions expanded continuously. At present, its application range has gradually extended many fields, such as semiconductors, aerospace and information. And it is providing a huge space for huge profits for diamond tool manufacturers.
