The wear situation and reasons of resin grinding wheels

The resin grinding wheel is very sharp when it starts to work, but after a long time it works slowly. In fact, each wheel has a certain lifetime. It is very safe to use it within the period of validity. Thus in order to know its performance, we need to study the wear situation and its reasons:

A. Abrasive wear. There often contains a variety of high-hardness particles in the workpiece material. When the abrasive particles and workpieces rub, it will be made the abrasive wear.

B. Oxidative wear. Common abrasives are oxides, carbides and nitrides. Oxide abrasives are stable in the air. The surface of other abrasives will cause oxidation at high temperatures, causing the gradually wear.

C. Diffusion wear. It means that when the abrasives are contacted with the workpiece at a high temperature, the elements of the diamond grinding wheel will diffuse to cause the weakening of the surface layer of the abrasives, then producing wear. The mutual diffusion of elements between two materials is closely related to their chemical composition. In the diamond abrasive, the carbon ability of dissolving in iron is greater than in boron nitride abrasive, so the diamond wheels are not suitable for grinding steel.

D. Thermal stress damage. During the grinding process, the abrasive working surface will be instantly rose to a high temperature, and the grinding wheel will be cold by the grinding fluid. Then the frequency of the cold and hot cycles is the same as the rotating speed of the grinding wheel, thus it will be formed a large alternating thermal stress on the abrasive surface. Thermal stress will break the surface. Thermal stress damage mainly depends on the thermal conductivity of the abrasive, the coefficient of linear expansion and the performance of the grinding fluid. The smaller the thermal conductivity, the greater the coefficient of linear expansion, the better the cooling performance of the grinding fluid. And then the greater the thermal stress, it is easier to make the abrasive damage under the thermal shock. The thermal conductivity performance order of various abrasive is diamond, cubic boron nitride, silicon carbide, corundum.

The above causes of the wear do not exist at the same time. According to different abrasives, the workpiece material and the grinding conditions, the main wear causes will also be different.
